Only in Night Terrors
It’s summer season at school. I’m going to China in August 9. Until then, I’m doing club activities at school and having a lot of downtime. In between web surfing and studying Japanese at my school, I remembered this little gem I did in college.

Radio drama download after the cut.
Only in night terrors was one of the radio experiments I had during the last year at my college radio station. I had a radio show and was music director for my college station for about 3 years at university, but during the last year, I really had a strong desire to do more experimental stuff. It’s pretty rare to have basically unlimited and free access to a broadcast medium that can go out to tons of people in a local community, so you should really see what you can do with it.
I did an anything goes experimental radio show called Dead City Radio with Peter. There, we improvised stories, music, and noise over other layers of stories, music and noise. One of the highlights was making a fake talk show, a nice poem from Peter over guitar and halloween noise, and a halloween spoken word piece.
The other thing I did was a Japanese radio show. For about three hours every Sunday, I covered a wide range of Japanese music, going for a different theme each week (you can check it out here).
I also set up for a lucid dreaming radio show that I’ll talk about in another post.
The biggest thing I did was Only in Night Terrors. Only in Night Terrors was a radio drama. I was interested in older radio dramas and the whole audio format. I love audio and sound, and you can save a lot of money on creating an environment through audio than in visualizing it with special effects, props, costumes, etc. I also love storytelling, and was trying out completely different ways to tell stories at the time.
The radio drama wasn’t narrated. It was more like a movie without visuals. The sound was very detailed to make it feel like you were in the location.
I wanted to make it a series based off of a narrator, Nicholas Barnes, who traveled to different locations on campus and spun a story off of an oddity at the school.
I had three ideas. I picked the simplest one to do. It’s about a girl who works at a modeling agency and wants to be a model. It comes with unexpected results.
Overall, I was very satisfied with it, and loved the fact that I could use so many friends and people from the school as staff. I wrote most of the script for the episode after, but ran out of time. I wish I did this earlier.
You can download the whole thing below. I’ll add a clip later when my computer gets fixed up.
